Phil was born in 1956 and grew up on the East Coast and in Key West, moving to St. Louis when he was a teenager. He graduated from Clayton High School after four years of participation in varsity baseball and basketball. Phil continued his athletic pursuits at the University of Missouri-Rolla, where he was a four-year varsity athlete in basketball, as well as a letterman in football and baseball. He began his career with Anheuser-Busch Companies as a Manager Trainee in an elite senior management trainee program for four years, moving between locations in St. Louis, Jacksonville, Williamsburg, and finally Los Angeles, where he worked on what was then the largest brewery expansion in the history of the industry.

Returning to his engineering background, Phil joined Coca-Cola Enterprises, where he directed capital projects at all 14 plants in his role as Director of Engineering. He served in this capacity for four years and eventually became responsible for 18 plants throughout the system. In 1985, inspired by the desire to raise his family in the Midwest, Phil joined Coca-Cola St. Louis as Vice-President of Manufacturing. Shortly after returning to St. Louis, Phil re-established his professional relationship with Bob Chapman, joining Barry-Wehmiller in 1986 as Vice President of Sales, Marketing & Engineering. He was named to his current role as Technology Group President in 1994 and directs the combined operations of the Design Group and FleetwoodGoldcoWyard, with Board responsibilities for the newly acquired Central Bottling International group out of Doncaster, England. He also has direct responsibility for Barry- Wehmiller, Inc. area sales responsibilities for the Pacific Rim and Puerto Rico markets.
